If you’ve been trying to get pregnant and you’ve been using the ovulation test strips and you’re frustrated with them because they can be working or not working, then this video is for you.

Marc: Hi I’m Marc Sklar The Fertility Expert and one of the more common questions I get is, what do I do with these ovulation test strips and how do they work and why aren’t they working for me? So here’s the first thing, most of my patients who are going through fertility challenges have hormonal imbalances. So these ovulation test strips are not the most accurate for them. These test strips were created for women who were very well balanced hormonally, have regular hormonal cycles, regular menstrual cycles… and they’re designed to pick up their perfect LH surge and tell them when they’re ovulating. But for many women that’s not accurate and that’s not possible so they get frustrated. They test and test and test and it doesn’t show positive or it shows positive for like a whole week. I hear that often for patients.

So one not all test strips are created equal. Two if you’re only testing once a day you’re doing it wrong. Those test strips were designed to show a surge within a 12 hour period. So if you take it every day 24 hours apart, then you possibly are missing your surge. So I encourage patients to test in the morning and then about 12 hours later as well so that you’re hopefully catching both surges. But don’t get frustrated if they’re not working. They’re really not my favorite thing to use in these situations until we regulate your hormones. So a better option would be Basal Body Temperature Charting, although it’s a little bit more labor intensive. And sometimes you’ve got to just listen and just pay attention to your body and your signs and symptoms to know when you’re ovulating. So I know it can be frustrating but I encourage you that it is frustrating to put down those strips and put them away, save your money and start looking for other ways to track your fertility.

  1. My cycles are 27 days. I think I missed my surge. I had an almost positive yesterday. Like it was dark but not dark enough to be a positive. Then I had the egg white CM today with a little ligjt brown discharge and I felt cramping in my ovaries. I checked and again. Dark but not quite positive. Now I'm concerned that I missed it 🙁

  2. So I got a very positive strip and a solid peak smiley on clear blue on the 31 of august so I hoped to have ovulated on the 1st or 2nd of September but I didn't get a temp shift until the 4th/5th. Is it possible that bbt can take an extra day to go up or does it necessarily go up the exact day after ovulation? I had intercourse the day before, day of, and day after my positive opk

  3. hi dr..trying to concieve this cycle…on period now as we speak..tmi i know lol..i have regular periods each month when is the best time to start using the OPK..Cause i was thinking after my period ends Cd6 or do you think that is too early to test…please reply..thanks in advance

  4. Hi I am 41 and had a MMC March 11, 2016 my husband and I have 3 healthy children together he is 42 I am devastated by the loss and we tried again this month I got an ovulation kit and it I had to fiddle with it to get it to turn on and would not turn on at all as I went to use last strip I started testing cd13-18 1x daily and got all negative however I am almost certain that I ovulated on cd15 do to a familiar slight pain I get each month from side to side it alternates. We ttc on cd 9,10,12,14 and sad to say I got my period today 5/13/16 we are going to try again but after this my husband does not want to try as we r getting older. I Need to make this last try count if you have any advice that would be wonderful and very much appreciated. Thank you for you time and videos have been helpful.have a nice day hope to hear from you soon.

  5. THANK YOU FOR THIS… I HAVE A QUESTION… TMI LOL SO IF A WOMEN HAS A REGULAR CYLE DOES THAT MEAN SHE HAS OVULATED… ALSO JUST SAY I TESTED ON THE 16TH AND IT WAS POSITIVE AT 530 THEN I TAKE ANOTHER OVULATION TEST AT LIKE 9PM AND THE LINE IS NOT AS DARK… DOES THAT MEAN I OVULATED OR ARE BOTH TEST A BUST…
